Job Description

People from the local community have maintained plots on the farm for around 30 years and play an important role in the life of the farm. For the individuals who hold plots the farm also plays an important part of their life to, many plot holders are elderly, struggle to speak English and suffer from health issues or isolation. Better organisation between plot holders will hopefully enrich the experience of growing on the farm whilst it may also enable the farm to help address any issues faced by plot holders themselves.

The community growing projects on the farm have had a very successful start with the Community Growing Club which is a bi-weekly open session where local residence can learn about organic growing and permaculture, collectively maintaining growing space on the farm and eat the produce! This project is set to expand dramatically with the creation of a 800m2 Community Garden which will comprise a forest garden, edible wildlife pond, kids growing area and outdoor cooking facilities. The community growing administrator will help organise these potential projects ensuring that all work is successfully advertised, sufficient outreach has been done, finally that everything is well documented and administrated.

Stepney City Farm is a charity based in Tower Hamlets dedicated to providing the people of East London the chance to experience rural life, and engage in educational, environmental and creative projects. We are a working farm with various animals on-site including donkeys, goats, chickens and ducks so the main focus of the day-to-day running of the farm is caring for the animals. However, the organisation also seeks to provide educational opportunities for the local community with regards to animal care, gardening and rural crafts. We run a Community Growing Club, rent out cheap allotment space, work in partnership with local Schools and Youth Clubs and have a range of craftspeople who work on site. The farm is currently in a process of transition with new works taking place on-site and the potential for a variety of projects so it’s an exciting time to get involved!
