One of the greatest skills you’ll learn as a student freelancer is dealing with rejection. With any freelancing role, developing a thick skin is a must. The freelancing world is a competitive one. You’ll apply or bid for scores of jobs but the actual yield will be rather small. Don’t let this get you down; it happens to every one of us freelancers.
And of course, you may have got the job only to be told your work is not up to ‘standard’. It’s tough, it can be sprit crushing, I know. Here’s how to deal with rejection FreelanceStudent style, without having to go crazy with weapons on your client or having to hit the union for medicinal drinks.
The trouble with freelancing is that it involves a lot of organisation. You need to get your head around a few basics or you’ll end up procrastinating or worse, failing your degree because of your freelance work. So let’s prevent that, shall we?

Ok, so you have decided to become a Freelance Student. You’ve gone out and touted for work, well done! Now it’s time to think about invoicing, and it’s a bit of a head-scratcher. Or it certainly can be if you don’t know how to approach it.
When you commence your freelancing career there are loads of important things to do. Defining your business and finding commissions are what freelancers tend to think about most. What often gets overlooked is invoicing. Invoicing is essential to remind your clients to pay you. Without a fool proof invoicing system in place, you could end up bashing your head against a wall waiting for a client to pay.
We want you to be clear about invoicing, it really couldn’t be simpler, here’s all you need to know about invoicing. Read the rest of this entry »

Being a student, you should by now have worked out the study/party balance. You know, the ‘If I study all week, I can party all weekend!’ mix. But now as a freelance student you need to add another ingredient into the mix. Your freelance work. Think of your life as a big cake - with any cake if you get the proportions wrong it’ll just taste horrible. In the case of work, it means something won’t rise. Don’t let it be work, study, or play!
Timetable It
The first thing you’ve got to do is work out how much free time you have and then, how much time you’ll need or want to work. Print out a timetable for the work – add your lectures and seminars in one colour. In another colour add the time for reading and writing assignments. Then add any other commitments such as sports or societies. Now it should be clear how much time you have spare to freelance. But…

Ok, so you need more money – living on Supernoodles and plain pasta is not conducive to good studying. But neither is getting a job (for many). So, you twiddle your thumbs wondering what to do. You think, ‘Shall I get a part-time job? Hmmm, but how can I find a job that fits around my studies?’ Then bang it hits you, ‘I can freelance!’ To steal a phrase from Barack Obama, at FreelanceStudents.co.uk we say, ‘Yes You Can!’

You’ve heard the phrase ‘time is money.’ But what does it mean? Well, there are 86, 400 seconds in a day. What if I said you could make a pound for every second? Kerrrrching! That’s £86,400 pounds in the bank. Now I’m not saying, as a freelance student you’ll make that much (maybe one day!) But I am saying don’t waste time; or you might as well take lovely crisp ATM-fresh twenties and flush them down the toilet.
Stop Facebooking, stop scrubbing the toilet like a OCD maniac, stop searching for funny cats on YouTube and don’t even think about ‘checking’ websites of ill repute (the one your mates say you should visit); you’ve got work to do and money to earn. Here are the reasons why procrastination is a problem and tried and tested, by me, methods to avoid the scourge of the freelance student.

Need a little more dough but can’t face getting a part time job? Here’s your answer: if you can write, all you need to do is log in and tap, tap, tappety-tap - you’ll make some easy, extra p’s.
Freelance writing really is easy if you know what you’re doing.
Putting aside the entire standard (read: boring) freelancing need-to-knows (accounting, time management and all that jazz), here’s the knowledge (well, the bare bones at least) to get you started as a student freelance writer.

This word has been going around since 2006 - you may have seen it being used on social networking sites - but if you are thinking, ‘what the heck is crowdsourcing?’ Don’t get lost the crowd, you need to know what crowdsourcing means to you as a freelance student.
At Freelance Students, we want you be ahead of the game (well, that’s what we’re here for), so here’s our rough guide to crowdsourcing.

Every internship cycle encounters a bulk of candidates who commonly fall into one of five personalities. Although most interns are generally positive, many also fall into the trap of being remembered for their not-so-outstanding attributes. To find out which one you fall into read the lists below and see how many of the statements you agree with. Read the rest of this entry »

As students we’re pretty laid back, right? We like things to be made easy for us and the easier the better. So, things like cooking recipes where all the different ingredients have to be bought, who can be bothered? It would be much simpler if, from our favourite armchair, we could view a recipe online and then with a simple click of a button all the ingredients are magically ordered and delivered. Imagine no more… new start up Recip.ly is making this a reality. Read the rest of this entry »
