Job Description

Travel as part of a small group and volunteer in pairs in the rural community of Philippolis. It is a wonderful opportunity to experience rural South African life, very different to bustling Cape Town and Johannesburg, and live independently – it is ideal for those ready for a challenge. There is a chance for cultural exchange whilst teaching English and/or coaching sports in a local primary and secondary schools, and living amongst the South Africans for 3 months in a rural setting. The teaching project is followed by a period of independent group travel in South Africa all with 24-hour support from our local representative.

Skills required

We require volunteers to speak English to a level where they are happy to teach basic English language. Volunteers need to be ready for a challenge and looking for a cultural experience. No formal teaching experience required. This is not a tourist holiday; it is about cultural immersion and adventure.

A day in the life of a volunteer

Whilst volunteering in South Africa you can teach English and/or coach sports to the children of the black and coloured communities, on your own or with your volunteer partner at primary and secondary schools. You will live as a group not too far from the schools. Set in the township of Philippolis you will experience a segregated community where there are separate schools for black, white and coloured children. You will start your day walking to school followed by your pupils wanting to hold you hand and enjoy your company. School is Monday to Friday with very early mornings – you could start at 7am so you will need to be there ready to start your lessons.

You will mainly be needed to help with English lessons, and possibly some Maths, Science and IT (if the school is lucky to have computers) classes too – whatever you are happy to help with. Your afternoons will be filled helping the Matric students with their studies. Homework sessions are a great way to get to know your pupils too.

There is also time for coaching sports, as well as community activities like art/crafts, drama and music for those who are keen on extra-curricular activities. Think on your feet and use your initiative! The more you put into school life and getting to know the community, the more you will understand about this amazing country.

Spare time

Spare time in the evenings or at weekends is spent preparing your lessons, marking books, or with the other volunteers and your new friends (neighbours and teachers). We encourage volunteers to get to know the locals – the teachers could even invite you to dinner.

Accommodation

Whilst volunteering in Philippolis your group will be accommodated in a basic house in the main town not far from the schools. There will usually be a shared bedroom, a kitchen/communal area and a washroom. You will live independently - cooking for yourselves and shopping in the local markets. Be prepared for intermittent electricity in the house – a head torch is useful in these situations! It is basic but all volunteers quickly grow to love their new home!

Our volunteer projects are a great way to improve your skills and enhance your CV - stand out from the crowd at job interviews! It is a competitive market out there - help others to help yourself!

Project dates - February to June

Prices from GB£3415 - covers pre-departure information, online health check with InterHealth, telephone briefing and a face to face meeting, orientation on arrival, accommodation and basic food allowance during your volunteer placement, and of course 24 hour in-country back up from our local representative.
