The internet has changed life as we know it for students, graduates and just about everybody! It has become the resource of choice. But with so much out there, where do you start? Well, with this question in mind, we thought it might be an idea to point you to a few excellent websites for information, deals, entertainment, holidays and pretty much everything else.
We’ve compiled a handy list, as a two part series, of some of our favourite sites for students to get you on your way! Here’s the first ten:
News

Guardian.co.uk - http://www.guardian.co.uk/
It’s not the 60s anymore, but students should still lap up the pseudo-lefty slant of the Guardian, making this a natural choice. They don’t charge, and their website is packed with bright colours, community comment sections, videos and podcasts, like the excellent Football Weekly. Socialism yeah!

Cynical Journalist - http://cynicaljournalist.wordpress.com
Not actually as cynical as he sounds, this blogger gives you a handy run-down of the next morning’s front pages.

General Knowledge

Wikipedia - http://www.wikipedia.org/
The fount of all general knowledge – most of it true – students and professionals alike wonder how they ever did without it. Personal favourite pastime? Following ‘related links’ for hours at a time.

How Stuff Works - http://www.howstuffworks.com/
Students are nothing if not inquisitive – impress your friends with the pub quiz knowledge by scouring this impressive blog, which comes with a dash of humour thrown in, e.g. ‘Poll of the day’: Do you know anyone who still has dial-up internet access?

Collaborative Working

Google Docs - https://docs.google.com/
Share everything from confidential company information to your ‘Who’s won the most at Fifa’ spreadsheet without ever needing to download the documents, and update collaboratively. Doesn’t even necessarily require a GoogleMail account, but it helps. See also the up and coming “Office Live” from Hotmail, which needs a bit of tweaking but could be a competitor.

Drop Box - http://www.dropbox.com/
Want to share a video or a record with your mates but it’s too big to attach to an email? Then use Dropbox which allows you your own bit of internet real estate from which others can share things with you and vice versa. The best bit? It’s free up to 2GB.

Social Networking

Facebook - http://www.facebook.com/
Surely you’ve all got it, right? Or at least seen the Facebook film? Well kids, it’s here to stay, and with ever more useful applications (like BranchOut) being added, you’d better stay on top of developments. Plus it’s really fun to leave sarky comments on the photos of your friends’ friends.

Twitter - http://www.twitter.com/
We’ve already told you how useful Twitter is to find jobs and how it can be used to network. Since then Twitter’s also had a makeover, meaning it’s easier than ever to network; and waste time, in 140 characters or less.

Deals

Groupon – http://www.groupon.co.uk
Students are always broke, so the internet’s ability to find cheap deals on food, drink and days out is a Godsend. Groupon provides coupons for the city you live in, and delivers helpful emails to your inbox reminding you of all the fun you could be having.

Deal Romeo - http://www.dealromeo.co.uk/
This site, which was only launched back in April, has built up a head of steam as the internet’s first (decent) aggregator for the kind of coupon/voucher sites which leave you with 8 million pop ups and a 50 quid a month standing order to Porn USA, or something. Browse all the deals in one place and save yourself the bother.
Do you know other useful websites for students for any of the above categories? Please leave a comment and let us know! Part 2 will be out next week.

Dropbox is great isn’t it? No chance of USB malfunction causing the loss of your dissertation the week before the deadline…

I’ve used http://www.studentbeans.com for years now. It automatically changes to ‘graduate beans’ when you do.
Although there’s online vouchers, in the main they’re best for use in shops, hairdressers and restaurants - so ideal for city based universities.

I moved-into a student house with friends for the first time this year and found http://www.mystudentbills.com really useful when it came to paying bills.
Wasn’t really sure what to do before we found it!
