Voluntary Jobs
Location: Tha Ton, Northern Thailand
Closing Date: May 26th, 2012
Job Description
Travel as part of a group and volunteer in pairs in the rural villages surrounding Tha Ton, northern Thailand. It is a wonderful opportunity to experience rural Thai life, living independently and ideal for those ready for a challenge. There is a chance for cultural exchange whilst teaching English in a local primary or secondary school, and living amongst the Thai people for 10 weeks in a rural setting. The teaching project is followed by a 4 week period of independent group travel in Thailand all with 24-hour support from our local representative.
Skills required
We require volunteers to speak English to a level where they are happy to teach basic English language. Volunteers need to be ready for a challenge and looking for a cultural experience. No formal teaching experience required. This is not a tourist holiday, it is about cultural immersion and adventure.
A day in a life of a volunteer
Set in a village not far from Tha Ton, you will start your day being awoken by the local children excited to play ball games and to get to know you.
Whilst volunteering in Thailand you can teach English on your own or with your volunteer partner at a rural government primary or secondary school. You will live either on the school grounds or close by and walk to school each day, alongside your pupils. School is Monday to Friday and normally starts early with assembly and the national anthem, followed by your English lessons. Lunch is provided in school and is a great way to try a variety of Thai dishes, and lots of rice!
There is also time for coaching sports too, as well as community activities like art, drama and music for those who are keen on extra-curricular activities. Think on your feet and use your initiative!
The more you put into school life and getting to know the community, the more you will understand about this amazing country. You may also like to offer English lessons to locals in exchange for Thai cooking tips or meditation lessons from local buddhist monks.
Spare time
Spare time in the evenings or at weekends is spent preparing your lessons with your volunteer partner, marking books, or with the other volunteers and your new friends (neighbours and teachers). We encourage volunteers to get to know the locals – the teachers could even invite you to dinner.
Accommodation
Whilst volunteering at your school you will be accommodated in a basic staff house normally within the school grounds, with your partner. There will usually be a shared bedroom, a kitchen/communal area and a washroom. There are no showers – that is done with a bucket, and toilets are normally of the squat variety. You will live independently - cooking for yourselves and shopping in the local market! It is basic but all volunteers quickly grow to love their new home!
Our volunteer projects are a great way to improve your skills and enhance your CV - stand out from the crowd at job interviews! It is a competitive market out there - help others to help yourself!
Project dates - January to April
Prices from GB£3075 - covers pre-departure information, online health check with InterHealth, telephone briefing and a face to face meeting, orientation on arrival, accommodation and basic food allowance during your volunteer placement, and of course 24 hour in-country back up from our local representative.
