Voluntary Jobs
Location: Various locations on the Caribbean and Pacific Coasts, Costa Rica
Closing Date: August 13th, 2011
Job Description
The Project
Volunteer abroad on our Sea Turtle conservation project in Costa Rica which was created with the purpose of protecting the female sea turtles, their nests and hatchlings laid along beaches on the Pacific and Caribbean coasts of Costa Rica against poachers and natural and introduced predators, using a man-made shelter called a "vivero". Refuges have been created in order to protect important nesting sites for the Pacific olive ridley, the leatherback, green turtles and occasionally hawksbill turtles.
At the same time the project team collects enough information about the nesting activity of the turtles so it can be used to improve the next seasons techniques and be shared with the community and local and regional authorities with the goal of building awareness about conservation. The sea turtle conservation programme is a scientific based conservation activity in which volunteers try to increase the amount of sea turtle hatchlings to give higher survival possibilities to these beautiful reptiles. The Sea Turtle projects were created with this conservation purpose and help to protect areas essential to preserving sea turtles and their associated ecosystems. Sea turtles are a wonderful legacy from prehistoric times and our goal is to help them to survive.
Role of the volunteer
Regardless of your location you will be involved with a number of different protection and maintenance activities including: beach patrolling at night to protect the turtles; collecting eggs and placing them on the “vivero”; maintenance of the camp and trails; helping in the butterfly and vegetable garden (Caribbean) with maintenance, planting and harvesting; helping to construct a vivero and in some cases you may even help to release sea baby turtles from the vivero by taking them to the beach and out into the ocean.
Project Fees
We do charge a project fee. Why pay to volunteer? Project fees for volunteering are an increasingly common necessity for volunteering abroad projects. With Kaya you can guarantee your contributions are put to best use. All our projects are supported by volunteer services which must be paid for; safe, quality homestay accommodation and 2 meals a day which can provide a local family with an income while ensuring the standards are suitable to volunteer needs, airport pick-ups and in-country support staff as well as briefing and orientation materials and language support.
