Job Description

  • The Project

Volunteer abroad with Kaya in Costa Rica and get hands-on teaching experience with children who will really benefit from international instruction. English as a second language is becoming more and more important in Costa Rica, especially in those areas where tourism is the main source of income for rural communities.

The protected areas of Costa Rica are visited by thousands of tourists each year which leave the country satisfied at providing incredible experiences for all to enjoy. Part of this experience for visitors is with the contact they have from locals in different areas of the country. The attitude that the “ticos” have toward the tourists is ultimately, what makes it more rewarding for foreigners to visit the country. With your help, more locals can communicate with these tourists, improving their English and therefore their interactions with others.

  • Why the project needs you

Due to the influx of tourists to Costa Rica, we consider it incredibly important to support the communities where tourism is deeply rooted to give them the necessary tools to improve their work. We are committed to developing not only English skills, but also musical skills in the local music school for children and adults who come to learn and/or practice how to play an instrument. As a volunteer with Kaya, you can provide your knowledge, support and musical abilities to the wonderful communities in Pochote.

  • Role of the volunteer

Volunteers will get involved with a diverse range of activities throughout their time on the project. You will be helping to teach English in relation to the schedules set by the teachers. You will act as an assistant during class time and will also be responsible for helping out with physical education and cultural classes amongst others. You may help to prepare didactic materials for both English classes and regular lessons and may even help out on field trips if they are scheduled at the time of your visit!

Should time allow, you may get involved with the wider community by helping to organize and prepare private English classes for them and also help to teach those interested in learning to play an instrument if you have skills in a particular field!

    Project Fees

We  do charge a project fee. Why pay to volunteer? Project fees for volunteering are an increasingly common necessity for volunteering abroad projects. With Kaya you can guarantee your contributions are put to best use. All our projects are supported by volunteer services which must be paid for; safe, quality homestay accommodation and 2 meals a day which can provide a local family with an income while ensuring the standards are suitable to volunteer needs, airport pick-ups and in-country support staff as well as briefing and orientation materials and language support.
