Job Description

Wellbeing In the City is a social networking platform that will revolutionise how we think about our Wellbeing, offering busy city people simple choices and connecting them with people and ideas that enable them to live a balanced lifestyle.

We are looking for smart, talented, enthusiastic web developers and software engineers who happily traverse a variety of languages and platforms and want to join a team that is passionate about creating something with meaning.

The Job

Software Engineer - building a smart social network that provides the tools and platform to connect people together for a shared purpose, and is coded in a flexible, extensible and logical manner.

Skills required

  • Experience of a variety of languages – ideally more than one of:
    • PHP / WordPress / BuddyPress / Zend framework
    • Ruby on Rails
    • Django
  • Ability to quickly produce clean, modular, well-organised code
  • Ideally, you’ll be able to code “end-to-end” including front-end work with HTML, Javascript, CSS and the jQuery framework (moving towards HTML5/CSS3)
  • Experience working in a team environment is a big plus, especially if you’ve followed an Agile development methodology
  • Using collaborative web-based tools for efficient team collaboration, source control, issue tracking, etc.

Who we’re looking for

  • You’re a problem-solver and always enjoy a good challenge
  • Turning an idea into a web app over a weekend is the kind of challenge you like to take on
  • You have a hunger for learning and when you need to, you learn faster than most would believe
  • You’ve got a good Computer Science or similar relevant degree (2.1 or above), or the hacking experience to render such degrees obsolete
  • When you know what needs done, you can churn out code until the sun comes up
  • There are always many ways to do things, and if there’s a better way, you’ll find it
  • Elegance is important to you, in coding and in designing beautiful user experiences
  • You re-use to build, and build for re-use
  • A strong believer in iterative and test-driven development – whether it’s writing code against unit tests, or developing features based on user testing results or metrics, you like the confidence testing at every level gives to your work
  • You appreciate the value of good tools and frameworks, but sometimes you’re just more at home in Vim, Emacs or Notepad++
  • You see developing as somewhere between an art, science and engineering
  • You can’t think of anything that would give you greater pleasure than to create something meaningful, beautiful and compelling that people will love using every day all over the world

How you’ll work

  • You’ll join our small team of passionate, fun-loving, dedicated developers working in our lovely Wellbeing Office in central London – just a few minutes from Angel tube station
  • We’re quite flexible – you can largely set your own hours as long as you’re there for the daily scrum and you get things done!
  • We’ll play to your strengths – so you could be involved in front-end design, web app development, back-end development, databases, security, user testing – plenty of opportunities to learn and grow at this stage!

If that sounds like you, please send us your CV / get in touch!
