Job Description
Plantwise is a global initiative, led by CABI, to improve food security and the lives of the rural poor by reducing crop losses.
We can reduce crop losses by collecting and sharing vital information about plant health. With the right knowledge we can identify plant health problems, slow down the spread of plant pests and diseases and provide the correct treatments before yields are significantly affected. Plantwise will make this knowledge accessible to those who need it.
Plantwise will deliver knowledge in two ways - face-to-face via a network of plant clinics in the developing world to help the poorest farmers and internationally via a comprehensive global knowledge bank.
CABI is offering an exciting opportunity to be involved in the development of this new initiative. We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated and highly organised biology student with an interest in plant pests and diseases to fill a temporary position in the Plantwise Knowledge Bank team over the summer. The ideal candidate should have at least completed the second year of studies on an undergraduate degree in biology or other relevant subject. Experience using GIS would be an advantage.
Activities will be tailored to the skills and interests of the successful applicant. Potential activities include: augmenting and refining the diagnostic images used on the website; using GIS tools to enhance the distribution map; locating sources of relevant plant pest and disease factsheets; investigating and collating country-specific information packages.
The post is for 2 months and we need someone to start as soon as possible.
