The curtain recently closed on the 2010 season of FreelanceStudents’ favourite – Dragon’s Den. We were thoroughly entertained as we witnessed manufactured Iberian pig feed, rotating washing lines, submarines and of course Kirsty Henshaw’s tear-jerker. However, it was Royal Holloway student Jessica Ratcliffe’s failed pitch for her computer games exchange website that caught our interest. Read the rest of this entry »

It’s competition time again! This time we’re giving one lucky student the chance to win a £50 Waterstone’s Gift voucher card! It’s a timely giveaway too, as the new academic year kicks off. There’s all sorts of possibilities with this very generous prize; leave the library behind and actually acquire those pricey books on your reading list; Tony Blair’s new autobiography (although it’s probably not a friend-magnet); perhaps throw in an additional £80 and arrive at uni with a seriously bling eReader.
Competition Details – “Retweet the Competition on Twitter”
We’re guessing that after the success of our last Twitter competition, you probably know what a “retweet” is. But just in case…
What is a retweet (often expressed as ‘RT’ on Twitter)? A retweet is when you share someone else’s tweet with your followers.
Here’s how to enter the competition:
1. Follow @frlstudents on Twitter
2. Retweet this competition by Clicking This Link (note you must click this link)
Now, there’s one unfortunate caveat. The competition is only open to FreelanceStudents members that are UK residents, due to shipping costs for international rates. Additionally, by entering the competition we reserve the right to publish the name, university, and town of the winners on FreelanceStudents.co.uk. Note we will never publish your full name.
Competition ends at 5pm Friday 24th September 2010.
5 Do’s and Don’ts for the New University Year

It’s that time of year again: 18-22 year olds up and down the country are dusting off their lashminas and getting their Mum’s to stock up on bog roll in anticipation of the grand opening of yet another year as a bright eyed, bushy tailed undergraduate. But smug as you may be that your student loan is just days away from defiantly fending off your encroaching overdraft, we also know that by November that new HD flatscreen TV and Xbox (plus a few dozen hangovers) won’t stop you going hungry as the dosh runs out. Lucky, then, that we aren’t going anywhere, and we’ll still be posting plenty of student jobs and handy hints and tips. Plus, we know University can be daunting for new students as much as returning ones. With that in mind, here’s a quick do’s and don’ts list for the classes of 2010-11. My soundest advice: Alka-Seltzer and Innocent Smoothies, and comfortable shoes. And under no circumstances is it a “good idea” to go to KFC after a skinful. Read the rest of this entry »
How to Use Google Realtime Search to Find Jobs

A bit like Gordon Gecko’s greed, our thirst for helping you find student jobs, internships, and work experience never sleeps. This week I’m taking a look at Google’s latest masterstroke: the appropriately titled ‘Google Realtime’. In the spirit of poor old redundant Stig, I’ll be giving it a wee test drive to see how it might help your job prospects. Grateful? Send your cheques to the usual address… Read the rest of this entry »
FreelanceStudents Rolls Out New Application Process

In our continued efforts to improve FreelanceStudents, we have rolled out new exciting updates this week! Key changes include the following:
Job Board
The Job Board layout has changed; the main title is bolder and the contract type (e.g. voluntery, temporary, etc), the company name, and the expiry date are now visible. There are further changes that will be made to the Job Board that will make it easier to refine your search, so you can find that great opportunity you’re looking for!
Applying for Jobs
This is the biggest change we’ve made. When an applicant applies for a job they are now presented with a page in which they can paste a cover note and attach a CV. The cover note and CV are then mailed to the employer via FrelanceStudents. This results in a much smoother process for both students and employers and is a standard industry practice.
Bugs
As ever, we do our best to ensure that any updates we make are bug free. However, if you notice any strange going-ons then please do contact us!
