Voluntary Jobs
Location: Cape Town, South Africa
Closing Date: August 14th, 2011
Job Description
The Project
Our sports project will enable you to volunteer in South Africa in the township of Masiphumelele, which has in excess of 35,000 residents. We work with a local primary, Xhosa speaking school with over 1300 pupils and only 30 teachers. PE lessons are held in the morning, but with class sizes that can be more than 50 pupils, the teachers find it hard to coach and keep control of the class, and provide extra help for those less naturally skilled or struggling with technique. Sports lessons at the school are between 08:30 - 12:30. Each class of 40-45 pupils has 30 minutes of PE during this period. With only one sports teacher to coordinate this, volunteer support is very much welcomed.
Why the project needs you
By assisting the staff in their PE lessons, you can provide more attention for the children, help those that are struggling, and for those with a passion for sport, you can help with skills training, teaching rules and umpiring games. In other projects there is a Wednesday afternoon sports club being set up that needs help training the kids, building and refurbishment activities within the smaller township schools that need help occasionally and ongoing community support initiatives at the library and community centres that can use support with any skills such as computer literacy that are in short supply.
Role of the volunteer
Assist in PE lessons each morning, helping teachers plan the class, assisting those that need individual attention and providing new ideas to make the classes exciting. In the afternoons you will rotate amongst a number of other community initiatives, including after school sports training, building and refurbishment projects within the schools and assisting children with arts, craft, computer literacy and other activities at the local library and community centres.
Project Fees
We do charge a project fee. Why pay to volunteer? Project fees for volunteering are an increasingly common necessity for volunteering abroad projects. With Kaya you can guarantee your contributions are put to best use. All our projects are supported by volunteer services which must be paid for; safe, quality homestay accommodation and 2 meals a day which can provide a local family with an income while ensuring the standards are suitable to volunteer needs, airport pick-ups and in-country support staff as well as briefing and orientation materials and language support.
