Job Description

  • The Project

Become a volunteer in Bolivia and work in this school that has been providing deaf children with special education since 1957. The project provides special education for children and young Deaf people across the country in all three educational levels: elementary, primary and secondary. The school not only provides education in the usual topics such as maths, English and science; it also has lessons in theatre, dance and body expression, ceramics, and deaf culture and identity. Alongside this occupational courses such as dressmaking, cookery, and metal mechanics are also offered. The schools mission is to become a model for Bolivia in the education of deaf people from a bilingual and bi-cultural approach.

  • Why the project needs you

This specialized deaf school is under-funded and under-staffed. The school needs assistance in order to provide adequate care and attention to its students, who are usually disregarded in the developing society. By having volunteers available at these schools, the project is able to concentrate their resources, and students are able to receive more individual care, allowing them to learn and progress more efficiently. Volunteers are also needed to impart a more positive view of disabled people than the students generally experience, and help boost their self-confidence and self-worth.

  • Role of the volunteer

Your role in this project will be to organize workshops for the students such as handcrafts, cooking, or dance. You will also work as a class assistant helping the teacher to follow their plan of study and class activities of maths, literature, sciences, history, and sports to name but a few!

Volunteers that are sports fans can organize soccer and basketball tournaments, and games. For those volunteers with previous experience in auditory medicine and other health fields can also conduct seminars about health topics.
