Job Description

We seek an exceptional individual to join our 11-strong team to lead our media work, enabling Free to Dance to reach a wide audience and realise its significant potential as a high-profile fundraising initiative.  The position is 8-16+ flexible hours per week on a voluntary basis.  It would ideally suit someone able to commit 2 hours per day, though by arrangement could fit into set days of the week.  The position would be ideal for an existing press officer looking to expand into the third/charitable sector, or a candidate looking for an energetic, engaging campaign to build their experience and profile.

Free to Dance team volunteers work flexibly across the capital – either at our LearnBurma address, at home or at a number of public access venues, and all meet together as a team once per week (Thursdays, 6.30-8.00pm).  Volunteers are provided with a pay-monthly sim card and netbook to perform their duties, as appropriate / required.

Key Responsibilities

Secure national, regional and local media coverage for Free to Dance, by:

  • Working with Ben and other Free to Dance team members to create an effective, time-phased press strategy
  • Working with Ben and the team to devise appropriate angles/messaging for Free to Dance
  • Connecting with and build relationships with media across the various platforms described below
  • Press releasing (prospectively and retrospectively) all events in the 2011 Free to Dance calendar – with particular focus on the Funkathon, Glastonbury, Notting Hill Carnival, Freemobs and World Record event.
  • Consistently monitoring all relevant forms of media to find opportunities for Free to Dance coverage
  • Using social media (twitter, facebook, blogs, website) to promote the media coverage Free to Dance receives
  • Helping to recruit required volunteers to support and advance your work
  • Attending weekly team meetings and a short weekly one-to-one meeting with Ben (in person or virtually)

Person Specification

  • A self-starter with a professional outlook, who works well to deadlines and as part of a busy team
  • A problem-solving approach to challenges and a outcomes-driven orientation
  • An excellent, persuasive communicator, both verbally (in person, to groups and over the telephone) and in writing
  • Able to rapidly build relationships with a wide range of people representing diverse sectors of the media
  • Sympathetic to the cause (Burma) and enthusiastic about our method (dance)
  • Proven track record in successfully securing media coverage for campaigns / projects

How to Apply

Please send your CV and a covering letter stating why you would like the position to Ben.  Be sure to show how you meet the person specification in your application.

This position will be advertised on a rolling basis until filled – so please apply as soon as you can.  Ben meets all applicants who meet or exceed the person specification, so if that’s you he’ll be in touch within a day or two of your application to arrange an informal interview in central London at a time convenient to you.

Good luck, thanks for your interest, and fingers crossed we’ll see you as part of the Free to Dance team very soon.
