Whether you’re a student working in a large corporate firm or an independent start-up with just a few employees, you will encounter some interesting personality types. We reveal 8 ‘wonderful’ different personalities, and advise on how to handle them and stay sane in the office! They are not in any particular order.

The Newbie

These come in a variety of different shapes and sizes and understandably they have an aura of unease about them, they’ll ask a gazillion questions and whilst most will be necessary allow them to figure some things out for themselves. It’s your duty to take advantage of their lack of experience, don’t be afraid to play pranks on them, it’s all a part of helping them settle in. Many a Newb will show little character to begin with, but given time they’ll evolve into one of the following.

The Miser

Normally male, the miser is a general killjoy, whose character is akin to that of the Grinch. The Miser will never be seen at any socials, nor do anything that may cause anyone the slightest of pleasure, as a cardinal rule the Miser will never dress down on a dress down day. In order to engage a positive response from a Miser you must engage them in a conversation based on a topic in which they take interest, this is normally something boring like types of wood.

The Usurper

There’s a bit of a Usurper in all of us, but what makes the usurper stand out is his unfailing ability to take advantage of every given situation. Someone’s going for a coffee run, the usurper jumps at the opportunity for a free coffee. Someone’s going to the Bathroom, the Usurper will ask him to go out of his way to pick some papers up from the printer. Someone’s brought Birthday food in, the Usurper sees it as a free lunch. In general the usurper will use and abuse, with the IOU mentality except they’ll never payout.

The Delegator

They say the higher up one climbs the less work they do, but this individual just takes the Michaels. Often a manager or long serving employee, The Delegator will spend most of their time dishing out tasks sometimes to departments that have nothing to do with them. The delegator spends little time actually doing anything but manages always to look busy. Often it’s hard to shake a Delegator off your back but try asking them a taxing question about the field in which they specialise and if it requires work or research The Delegator will stay well away from you.

The Vuvuzela

Allergic to silence the Vuvuzela will do everything it can to make noise, meaningless pointless and irritating noise, noises that will do nothing to improve anyone’s quality of life. More often than not they can be found making loud private phone calls, loudly typing on their keyboard or laughing, loudly. The Vuvuzela is a social animal who can only be silenced by a hangover.

The Ice Queen

Professional from head to toenail, The Ice Queen knows not the meaning of fun, only Gordon Brown could match her for a social life. A walk over to her desk will be met with a death stare enough to riddle anyone with fear. The Ice Queen is not scared of confrontation and all men who approach her are swatted down like flies. She eats Newbs for breakfast. While the Ice Queen may appear unbreakable, she’ll attend one social a year, too polite to turn down a free drink sending classy cocktails her way can have some interesting side effects.

The Yes Man

Always willing to please, those in his environment mould his character; your opinion is conveniently his opinion. The yes man will never argue, even if he knows his right. If you need someone to work late, early on Christmas or New Years, ask the Yes man. But be nice to the Yes man, you never know when you may need a Yes…man.

The airhead

There’s an airhead in every office. If you’re unaware of who the office airhead is, then unfortunately, it’s probably you. It’s not your fault. The airhead generally means well but how can I put it…There’s nothing but air in her head. Enough Said.

It’s been a pleasure.
