In the 7 months we’ve been in operation FreelanceStudents has seen steady growth, with many small (and some large) businesses jumping on board and many students from across the UK signing up. To keep up with this growth, we decided to embark on a redesign of the site. It was a big effort and we’re pleased with the result…

FreelanceStudents Voted a 2010 Smarta 100 Winner!
We’re very chuffed today as we have been selected as a 2010 Smarta 100 winner! Smarta.com is a popular free online business resource for small business owners.
FreelanceStudents was chosen by a judging panel including Deborah Meaden and other leading entrepreneurs such as Bebo Founder Michael Birch as a winner of Smarta.com’s inaugural ‘Smarta 100’.
According to the Smarta website:
The Smarta 100 are the most exciting, promising, disruptive new businesses, the family businesses who remain the cornerstones of communities, the innovators ploughing their own furrows in staid or declining industries, the recession-busters making a mockery of the doom and gloom, the web wonders, the teenpreneurs, mumpreneurs, olderpreneuers and, er, just about anyone who’s running a small business worth shouting about.

FreelanceStudents: What Would You Like to See?

Firstly, we would like to wish our many readers a very merry Christmas! Believe it or not FreelanceStudents is almost 6 months old. Back in July 2009, we launched with a vague business plan that would have been savaged by the Dragons. Since then we’ve been featured in the Metro, startups.co.uk, killerstartups.com, and we’re in discussions to be part of a network run by the Guardian. However, we know this site could be much better! So, we’ve been covertly plotting an upgrade fresh for the New Year and to mark the 6 months, and we thought it would be a good idea to get some community feedback.
So if you have a spare minute, here are a few questions you might have some thoughts on:
- If you’re a job board user, is there anything you’d like improved or added there?
- Would you like to see anything done differently with the blog itself e.g. more frequent posts?
- Are there any services you’d like to see offered here?
- Are there any resources or tools you’d like?
And of course any other feedback is welcome. You can either contact us via our feedback form here or leave a comment below.
We’re committed to making FreelanceStudents the best it can be!
NEWS: Small businesses should tap into the freelance talent pool to survive the downturn

Yesterday an interesting article dropped into our inbox – “Make use of freelancers, firms told” – naturally, most mails don’t pass our instant-delete-suspect-email process, but due to the title of the mail, we read on. And we’re very glad that we did, as the article substantiates what we’re trying to achieve here at FreelanceStudents.
In brief the article discusses comments made by Sir Tom Farmer, the founder of Kwik-Fit and Michael van Swaaij, the former managing director of eBay Europe and chairman of Skype.
Sir Tom outlines why he believes over the next 10 years companies will “trim the fat” and look to outsource non-core activities. Translated, this means Sir Tom sees companies increasingly looking to use freelance and short-term staff.
Michael van Swaaij backs up Sir Tom’s comments by stating that the traditional model of employer/employee is clearly changing.
You could say we were ahead of the game! The full article can be found at http://www.mybusiness.co.uk/YaG1H5xo6VWuDg.html.

If you’ve been keeping an eye on our website, you may have noticed that we’ve introduced a new Forums area! This is the first of a number of initiatives we have coming out of our creative lab in order to make FreelanceStudents an engaging and useful website for the student community. So, go right ahead and discuss jobs, student life, freelancing, and, in fact, anything that comes to mind! Don’t be shy.
Before participating we recommend that you read our “Forum rules” and also the “Forum FAQs”. After you’ve digested those serious matters, why not introduce yourself in the “First time?” forum.
We’ve created 11 discussion areas:
FreelanceStudents
First Time? – Is this your first visit to the forums? Start a new thread and introduce yourself.
Terms of Use – Forum rules. Please read these carefully!
FS Official Announcements – A thread for official announcements regarding FS.

If you’re a student struggling to secure a full-time job, or an employer seeking talented and enthusiastic temporary staff to help sustain or even expand your business, then this site can help.
Welcome to FreelanceStudents, the new student job board and careers blog. So, you’re probably thinking two things: that there’s already a gazillion student job websites and that blogs are the mind-numbing musings of people who have nothing better to do. We couldn’t agree more. But FreelanceStudents offers something unique, and of real value, especially in these testing times, to both students and employers.
