As you may have noticed, if you’ve been keeping your eye on FreelanceStudents over the past couple of weeks, it’s our 1 year anniversary. It’s our first birthday! It seems like only yesterday when the idea was dreamt up in a South London flat. It’s been a tough 12 months and to celebrate we underwent a re-design and we’ll also be giving away a few prizes. Here are some highlights from the past year… Read the rest of this entry »

16th July 2010 was a momentous day… it marked the end of our first year in operation. High 5s all around! We didn’t think we’d make it past two months, but thanks to you guys we’re still here, and looking forward to the year ahead. To celebrate we embarked on a slight re-design and re-programming of the site. Today it gives me great pleasure to show you the final result … Read the rest of this entry »
FreelanceStudents wins Natwest special prize at the Smarta 100 awards

Back in February of this year, FreelanceStudents was voted as one of the most promising small businesses by Smarta – a popular free online business resource for small business owners. The panel of judges included Deborah Meaden and other leading entrepreneurs such as Bebo founder Michael Birch.
To celebrate the Smarta 100, a winners’ reception was recently held on 20th May where FreelanceStudents, to our complete surprise, picked up one of four awards – ‘The Natwest special award’!
Being chosen as a Smarta 100 company was fantastic, especially as the list was evaluated by respected and experienced business people. However, to go on and win one of four prizes at the winners’ reception is unbelievable. We’re truly humbled and this has given us the motivation to continue to improve and grow the site!

It’s been a while since we’ve updated the blog and this is largely because we’ve been focusing on a redesign for FreelanceStudents. A recent drive to recruit writers for our blog, however, has prompted us out of hibernation to provide some much needed advice to the many students out there who are simply not doing their job applications justice.
From the applications we received we found a number of common mistakes, which we’ve listed below. We imagine that many will probably think this all common sense, but for those of you that have not seen much success in getting work experience we suggest you give this article a good read and hopefully we can get you producing applications that will get you that job. So, it’s that special time of year again when some of you are about to embark on – to apply an overused cliché – the best years of your life.
In a centuries-old tradition, you will be expected to do little more than drink and be merry. Some of you will be so caught up in your new hedonistic lifestyle that you may forget what you’re even supposed to be studying.
Freshers’ Week is an exciting time with endless opportunities to meet new people and try new things. But for some it will be daunting – the thought of being homesick and pants-messing nerves will outweigh the prospect of having fun.
As someone who’s survived the experience, take the following nuggets of knowledge along with you: Read the rest of this entry »
FreelanceStudents is now on Twitter

We’ve recently set-up a FreelanceStudents twitter account! Twitter obviously needs no introduction, and love it or loathe it, it’s hot property right now with many popular celebrities tweeting. We’re not going into an article about Twitter here, as this is just a quick announcement. However, we will, in the future, write articles on how students can benefit from utilising Twitter.
By using Twitter we hope to better connect with our readership and users, and foster a community amongst freelancing students. We will also be looking to tap into the minds of our readers and seek their advice and opinions; we would like to think we know it all, but honestly, we don’t.
Finally, we’re no pros at this Twitter game and admittedly some of the bird-style lingo has us confused, but we’re willing to learn. So, if you got any advice for us, or your fellow students, on how to roll in the Twitterhood (does that work?), then please leave us a comment or two below… we would appreciate it! You can find us on Twitter as @frlstudents. Feel free to share your twitter contact details too.
FreelanceStudents gets a “Killer” review

Just a quick announcement – we recently received a cool independent review from the good people over at KillerStartups.com. Click here to read the full review. KillerStartups reviews up-and-coming internet start-ups. They see themselves as a user driven internet community, and this is evident in that members can vote, comment, contact the start-ups reviewed, share their opinion if they think that start-up will go IPO, survive, etc.
We’ve worked extremely hard to put this project together, so it’s nice to receive such a favourable review and to be seen as a potential “killer”. But (there’s always a “but”), this is only the beginning, so we’re not going to down our tools and bask in any glory. We know we can improve and we’re going to do so. And we want your input to help us get better, so if you have any feedback then please contact us here.
A quick word on the voting. We would appreciate it if you could support us by pressing the vote button next to our name on KillerStartups.com (make sure you don’t accidentally vote for the others!) on this specific page: http://www.killerstartups.com/top/. A big thanks to all those that have already voted! You’ve very kindly kept us in the Top 4 for this month.
