A few weeks ago we stumbled across a new-ish social media website called Bragster.com. Not another one, I hear you cry. Yep, but this isn’t just about endless twittering or photo-prying, this is much more fun. Described as “Jackass meets Facebook” Bragster is all about dares, where users challenge each other to do absurd stunts, film themselves, and then “brag” about it.
Bragster is a London-based venture that was founded by Bertrand Bodson and Wim Vernaeve. The idea came about to the duo when Wim was working at Morgan Stanley and he got dared by a colleague to go bald before an important client meeting. It never happened, apparently, but Bragster was born.
How it Works
In their own words:
Ego is everything at bragster, the online community for daring, boasting and bragging. Upload all of your best videos, earn bragging rights and compete to get to the top of the rankings. The more insane the better, so step away from the computer, get out of the house and wreak some havoc in a city near you
Once you’ve registered as a member, you can instantly begin to upload videos and photos of your ridiculous antics, or “dare”, and the community decides whether your dare is “cool” or “lame”. The cool votes earn you more bragging rights, which translate into points. You can also dare other users in the community, and they reply with a video, which you can again give the thumbs up or thumbs down. Here is the Bragster opening video:
Growth
The website owners claim to now be reaching 7 million people a month through site visits and their own syndicated content. The word seems to be out on the street too, as 50 cent and Snoop are reported to be members. Whilst the reach is impressive and having celebrity backing can’t hurt, it seems, to us, that their audience might be limited to a crazed mass. So, we got in contact with Bragster to understand their long term vision:
The long-term vision is for bragster to be the community of choice for everyone that wants to set or take on dares, or has anything at all to show off about – not just “jackass” type material, but world records, skill-based sports and activities such as skateboarding/bmx/etc
Dares
Dares vary from the mild (superman escalator), to the ridiculous (eating soap), to the potentially dangerous (plasma surfing). If you’re not one for bragging you can still get involved, as there are tons of fun videos to watch and people to chat to.
Whilst we don’t condone dangerous activities, Bragster is clearly good fun! Now you really can prove to the world that your midnight naked dash across campus isn’t just a myth.
Have you used Bragster? Why not post a link to your dare, or dares, below?
